California AB 306 would prohibit state code updates for residential units from June 1, 2025, until June 1, 2031, unless those changes are deemed “emergency standards,” address home hardening and are proposed by the State Fire Marshal, or concern single stairway proposals, adaptive reuse or water reuse. Local amendments are also largely prohibited. The bill’s reason statement contends that code updates harm affordability and occur too frequently for industry stakeholders. This bill passed out of the Assembly today and is headed to the Senate.
