Jim Brewster, City of Santa Monica

Jim Brewster has 32 years of construction experience. Jim holds a California State Contractor’s License In addition to many ICC certifications. 

Jim began employment with the City of Santa Monica as a Building Inspector in 2005, to present. During that time, Jim worked his way into some of the large, more complex projects in the City.  

Since 2013, Jim has taken on more responsibility. While keeping up with day to day inspections, Jim also handles construction complaints of all kinds, to review and resolve. Jim has also worked closely with the Santa Monica Code Enforcement Division, in assisting with technical code knowledge and assisting with investigations on work without a permit. 

During regular business hours and afterhours, Jim responds to Police and Fire dispatch calls as needed. After a structure fire, or a vehicle into structure, or some other unique Catastrophe. Jim is a building and safety representative that is typically called out to evaluate the possibilities of maintaining occupancy. All these cases lead to a habitability determinations and structural integrity of damaged buildings.  

In 2019, Jim was promoted to Lead Building Inspector.
