PROGRAM: Structural Seismic Evaluations: What codes and standards should we use?
(The program is approved as Preferred Provider, 0.1 CEU)
The evaluation and possible seismic retrofit of existing buildings can be triggered and mandated by various factors including a change in occupancy, major structural damage, major structural alteration, or seismic ordinances. Once an evaluation is triggered the design professional must decide what structural code or standard should be used. The selection can be difficult given the amount of options that are currently available. Agencies having jurisdiction can also be confused when determining if the selected methodology will meet the mandated performance objective. This presentation will provide an overview of the philosophy behind many popular evaluation documents including ASCE 7, ASCE 41, FEMA P58, ATC 78, FEMA P807, FEMA 154 etc. The presentation will provide design professionals and building officials a better understanding of the document strengths and limitations.
